A Place To Find Your Family History

Mark (Morena) Marino

As many of us have encountered, registrars incorrectly entered our names on Birth Certificates and they were never changed.

This is what happened to me. My Birth Certificated has my last name as Marino but I am a Morena. When I wanted to change from Marino back to Morena, I found that there would be too many changes for me and my children so I did not make the change.

My father was Matteo Morena.  He was born March 19, 1903 in Greci. He died January 27, 1944 in the USA.  He was married to Raffaella Capobianco Morena, my mother,  She was borm November 5, 1910 in Bronx, New York and died January 9, 2003 in the United States.

My father had two brothers, Giuseppe and Nicola Morena and a sister Narduccia.  Giuseppe lived in Canton, Ohio and had a large extended family while Nicola and Narduccia stayed in Greci.  They are all deceased now. My father's brother Giuseppe Morena and his wife Raffaela Norcia Morena are the couple in the picture below with my father and mother.

Fathers parents were Marco Morena and Maria Michela DeFillips Morena. Their picture is below.

My mother was born in the Bronx while her parents were born in Greci. Leonardo Capobianco her father was married to Maria Mella.  My mother Raffaella had two brothers Ambroggio and Michael and four sisters, Mildred, Assunta, Michalina and Josephine.  All are deceased.  My mother was the oldest and lived in New Jersey.

The picture above is the wedding picture of Maria Mella and Leonardo Capobianco my Maternal Grandparents.  The picture below is Raffaella Mella Lauda, my grandmothere's sister

My visit to Greci - 1950

My parents talked about Greci all their life and I was able to first visit in 1950 and was able to see all that was talked about and felt very much at home.  The following are pictures taken duriing that visit.

Photo above of Mark, Aunt, Uncle and Cousins L to R Antoinette Gliatta, Nicola Morena in front of Giusepina Morena holding hands with Maria Morena. In the back - Leonarda Morena Gliatta with Carosena Glaitta in front, Mark Marino, next to Mark is Marco Gliatta, in front of Marco is Carmela Gliatta, Leonardo Gliatta.

My visit in 1950 was over 60 years ago.  As you can see from all these pictures, this was a very important event in my live.  This was just a few years after the Second World War. When I visited I was in my service uniform. I was welcomed as a family member.

St. Bartolomeo Drama
One of the things I remember was the San Bartolomeo Festival in Lodi, New Jersy. St. Bartolomeo is the Patron Saint of Greci. Each year the people from Greci who live in Lodi would put on the Drama just like it was presented in Greci. I was brought up in New Jersey and remember that time with happiness The pictures below are from the great time. I think that they were taken around 1941

The play was similar to the one traditionally preformed in Greci and was presented in Lodi in August for many years as part of the week long Feast of San Bartolomeo.

All the performers were people who originally came form Greci or were descendants of Greccesi.  Nicolas Vara had the photo of the cast.  His Grandfather Nicholas is in the front row, third from the right (not counting the horse!)

Nick Fofa is the one on the horse.

In this pictue Maria my sister is setting beside the Queen (this part was played by a man).  The Bad King is on the far left.  This part was played by Antonio Bonetti.  The angel in the back was played by Joe Deminno.

During one of the years when the Bad King was killed, he was lying on the stage and his hat fell off.  He moved to put his hat back and this action was remembered by everyone.  He received a lot of teasing.

The director of some of the plays was Francesco Demmino.  He was in a wheel chair and could not walk but he was at all of the practices and the performances
